During the 1990’s Daniel toured internationally & recorded with two icons of Ethiopian music, Ms. Aster Aweke & Mr. Mahmoud Ahmed. Saxophonist Girma Woldemichael, who grew up playing in Addis Ababa Ethiopia during it’s “golden age” of popular music, was also on the bandstand. Now they’ve teamed up to present Daniel’s original compositions alongside genre classics in The Barnes & Woldemichael Ethio-Jazz Quartet. Daniel writes from “an Ethiopian perspective” in style, content & narrative. He carries on the genre's fusion of Ethiopian music with American, Caribbean, Latin & other influences.
Barnes & Woldemichael have performed in Toronto for The Aga Khan Museum, The Ashkenaz Festival, Habari Africa Festival & Jewish Music Week in Toronto. The group's homebase is Hirut Cafe in Toronto's little Ethiopia, East side neighborhood. This photo by Gloria Blizzard. Band website is coming!
