Daniel Barnes Quartet - "Classic Beauties Revisited"

 —  —

The Jazz Bistro, 251 Victoria St., Toronto

Daniel’s album “Classic Beauties” and this acoustic quartet pays homage to the rich jazz tradition that generations of music lovers have turned to for spiritual uplift, a good time, to gain musical knowledge and to hear stories “the greats” have told through their instruments. An all original program, Daniel’s compositions carry a distinctly lyrical, melodic and buoyantly swinging character. The quartet plays music from both “Classic Beauties” and Daniel’s debut release “Culmination” which are staples on JazzFm and CBC Radio. You’ve likely heard them before! William Sperandei - trumpet, Ewen Farncombe - piano, Paul Novotny - acoustic bass and yours truly on drums & compositions! I'm pleased to say the kitchen is doing a wonderful job of offering a fine dining experience as do the wait staff. Cover Charge is $20 and Reservations are recommended.

BARNES & WOLDEMICHAEL Ethio-Jazz Quartet

 —  —

Hirut Cafe & Restuarant, 2050 Danforth Avenue, Toronto

Combining ancient Ethiopian music traditions with American, Caribbean & Latin influences creates an international jazz sound suitable for the dancehall as much as the concert hall. Drummer & composer Daniel Barnes (Toronto) and Saxophonist Girma Woldemichael (Ethiopia) began working together during the ’90’s, touring internationally with an icon of Ethiopian culture, vocalist Aster Aweke. Daniel’s original music, written from an Ethiopian perspective, alongside genre classics, cherished support musicians and Girma’s “real deal” sound, make this Canada’s foremost Ethiojazz group!
