Currently Daniel leads Barnes & Woldemichael Ethio-jazz with top ranking Ethiopian born saxophonist Mr. Girma Woldemichael. Daniel's Original Compositions entwine with Ethiopian-Jazz Classics for a truly International Jazz Sound . See “EthioJazz" for more on this project.
As a support drummer for others Daniel stays active in Jazz & Global music fields. During 2022 he toured extensively with Ethiopian keyboard legend Mr. Hailu Mergia!
During May 2024 catch Daniel playing Toronto venues with The Sattalites Reggae Band, Crooner Colin Hunter & The Joe Sealy Quartet (classic vocal jazz), vocalist Denielle Bassels (Nina Simone tribute) and three seperate venues with Blues & R 'n B vocalist Heather Luckheart. About Daniel’s albums; A co-production with David Travers-Smith, his debut release “Culmination” (2003) broke him at national jazz radio. It features six original pieces and his arrangement of five jazz standards. Fifteen musicians, some of Canada’s finest, were harnessed to create “a varied & interesting program” - Jim Galloway for Wholenote Magazine.
Daniel’s follow up "Classic Beauties” (2007) is melodic swinging jazz, classic in feel. All original compositions set for acoustic quintet. "Barnes compositions specializse in relentlesly thrusting music of broad appeal and warmth that give bandsmen broad latitude to wail .... “ said Geoff Chapman at The Toronto Star. Both albums feature top Canadian jazz names.
